Yesterday I received from Amazon the book of Terence Tao “Solving Mathematical Problems, a personal perspective”. In the preface I read the following interesting saying by the Greek Philosopher Proclus which I quote here:
This therefore is Mathematics: She reminds you of the invisible forms of the soul; She gives life to her own discoveries; She awakens the mind and purifies the intellect; She brings light to our intrinsic ideas; She abolishes oblivion and ignorance which are ours by birth.
Except for the content of the saying, it sounds interesting to me that Mathematics is visualized as if it were human. Not with an “it” but with a “she”. I look forward to reading this ~100-page book written essentially in 1990, when according to the Wikipedia article, Tao was 15 years old.
